Silence Gives Consent!

When I first watched Schindler’s List I remember having a discussion about why the Holocaust happened, or rather, why it was allowed to happen. We spoke about silence. While the Holocaust was happening the whole world was watching. They were watching in silence, and their silence gave consent. No one stood up and said “This is wrong. This must be stopped.” Once we did it was too late and millions of people had already been murdered. It is for this reason, the inability to act, that the whole world is ashamed of themselves for this moment in history.

Now, I always thought that there was a certain line in politics that was never crossed. There was the old ad from the 60’s with the nuclear bomb and the little girl, which went too far. People are (rightly so) scolded for using Osama bin Laden and references to 9/11 in ads. Now maybe I’m too naïve, but I always thought that Hitler and the Holocaust were also off limits.

Then I read this:

“A new e-mail making the rounds among Jewish voters in Pennsylvania this week...equated a vote for Senator Barack Obama with the “tragic mistake” of their Jewish ancestors, who ‘ignored the warning signs in the 1930’s and 1940’s.’”
Excuse me? Did I miss something? Has campaign politics just hit a new low?

The worst part is that the article states that this e-mail was not from the average Racist Ronny or Betty the Bigot. No, these e-mails are sponsored by the Pennsylvania Republican Party’s “Victory 2008” committee and it was signed by several prominent McCain supporters in the state.

Now, forgive me for sounding so, what’s the word… idealistic, but I thought we as human beings knew that the Holocaust, being one of the most awful events in our history was off limits in politics, and to suggest that voting for Barack Obama may lead to another one is absolutely repulsive.

Here we have elderly Jewish voters in Pennsylvania, many who may have lived through the Holocaust or certainly may have been affected by it. I’m sure these voters are already flooded with e-mails and phone calls saying Barack Obama is a terrorist and a Muslim. Now, they have to deal with ones comparing him to a past that was so painful it still may very well haunt them to this day.

And the Republicans think this is okay? It is okay to ask these voters to relive the horrors of the Holocaust? Because that is exactly what this e-mail does. Do not make the same “tragic mistake” it says. And with those words the tragedy is instantly brought back to them. Perhaps I am overstating what I know. In fact, I know nothing, I am not in any of their minds, but I can only imagine how painful and horrifying it would be to receive any e-mail that may even have the possibility of bringing up such dreadful memories.

I did not know the Republicans could hit a new low.

I knew they would call Obama a Muslim. I knew he would be compared to terrorists, but Hitler? This is a disgusting new mark even for the Republican smear machine. If I were a Republican I would be ashamed. In fact, I am ashamed. I am ashamed because I am an American and this is happening in America. I am revolted at these tactics because as an American I believe we have become better than the Nazis and their intense hatred for others. However, in fact we have not. I guess during a campaign everything is fair game. Nothing is off the table, feelings be damned. History be damned.

Well this time, Republicans be damned. This time your tactics will not work. And you should be condemned for them. This is something that we can not sit back and allow. We must tell everyone what they are doing. This can not merely be let go to the wayside. This time they have gone too far. This time they are not simply comparing Obama to a radical man of the 60’s but the most evil man who ever lived. Tell everyone you know about this travesty. We must spread the word. Let your outrage be heard. If we do not then our silence gives consent.

Let us know how you feel America. Let it out. Be heard here. Be heard now.

Our silence must not give consent. Not this time. Not anymore. Not ever again.

Silence is not golden. Silence is fatal,

Can Idealism and Realism Call a Truce?

As I write this post, I see at the top of our page a countdown ticker. It says 13 days until the American people elect their new president. I look at the poll tracker on our page that says Obama is riding a 10-point lead. I look at the polls we place on our page to get an idea of what you are all thinking, and most of them seem to favor Obama. All four debates seemed to go in the Obama/Biden direction by all polling and opinions. Colin Powell endorsed Obama. The climate all around seems to reflect a shift towards Obama. The media seems to be calling McCain out on his lies and distortions over and over again. The Republican Party has resorted to every attack they can think of, and I do not think I need to go over them; we have addressed them over and over again. All signs seem to point to Obama…

So tell me why I am still skeptical? Tell me why I am hesitant to show excitement? Why should I be skeptical? I will tell you why…

Maybe it is the duality of my being, the idealist inside me at constant war with the realist. You see I want to believe that a transformational and inspirational leader could take office at this point in my life. I want to believe that the American people have had enough of their government failing them. I want to believe that we will no longer allow our leaders to insult our intelligence. But I am scared.

I am scared that somehow we will be let down again. I am scared of the people that will vote for a candidate based solely on his stance on abortion. I am scared of people that somehow still think Obama is a Muslim, and some how think that would disqualify him for the office of president. I am scared of people that think he is a terrorist and anti-American. I am scared of people that will not vote for him because he is African-American. I am scared of the young people so motivated by Obama not going to the polls on Election Day. I am scared of putting faith in polls that could easily be inaccurate and false. I am scared of people thinking, “Oh Obama is ahead in the polls…I don’t need to vote.” I am scared that the republican machine will steal an election just as they did in 2000. I am scared that there is still a chance that all the negativity will catch, just as it did in 2004, and the republican smear campaign will...you guessed it...steal this election. I am scared of some sort of surprise “We caught bin Laden, and McCain did all the work!” proclamation a week before the election. I am scared of a party that will do anything and everything necessary to win an election.

I am skeptical. I do not want to assume anything yet. I will keep writing my thoughts and trying in my own small way to be heard. I am skeptical…but I am still hopeful. So please go to the polls on Election Day. Vote early if possible. If you have friends that do not seem to care, get them involved. If you have something to say, say it. Everyone is welcome to post his or her thoughts here. If you like what you read here, put it out there, tell your friends, tell your family. Do something. Just get involved. Do not let this one be decided by everyone else.

I should not be scared or skeptical and neither should you.

Skeptically hoping for the best,

Can We Believe in Change?

There is a school of thought, or perhaps a political philosophy that says things in this country will never change. This theory says that we will always have two ruling parties that will always be at the opposite ends of the spectrum. Our elected officials will never work together to reach common human, universal goals because these two parties represent two very different ways of living. This theory also loves to mention the fact that politicians will always be crooked because they have power, and with power comes corruption. They would say that is part of the job.

With that in mind let’s state the obvious:

Senator Barack Obama is going to win this election.

The polls are clearly leaning in his favor. The issues are on his side. There has been a bad Republican President for the last eight years. John McCain has given in to using Swift Boat attacks, a sure sign of desperation. All signs point to yes for Obama.

Now, come November 4th Obama may lose, and believe me if it happens, at that moment I will surely eat some crow. In fact, I’ll be eating crow for a while if some how John McCain reaches into ANWR and drills a victory from a bridge to nowhere.

But this is about Senator Obama winning. So let’s look thirty days in the future and say that he won…

Now, I know that Senator Obama is not perfect. I know that he will not lead this nation to the Promised Land. I know that Senator Obama is a politician. I know that he has to play the game because that’s what a President does. I know that he may not be all the change he has promised to be. Believe it or not I am not so naive as to think any different.

But why not?

The problems don’t lie with Senator Obama. The problems lie with us and our inability to want to change. The inability to leave the status quo we have all grown used to, because it is all we have known, it is all we have been.

The problem lies with the fact that we have a person who wants to do something about the way our system works (or doesn’t work I should say). Senator Obama understands that our government has become so partisan and so poisoned (on both sides) that no progress can ever get done.

There are issues that will divide us. As long as day exists there will be night. This is how politics seems to work. But why can’t we as a nation come together on common ground and move toward a better society? Why is it that we are so content with the way things are?

If Senator Obama is the “Change We Can Believe In,” why do I feel like no one truly believes?

Can we believe in change?

Perhaps my feelings that we are unwilling to change has to do with the fact that when Senator Obama wins there will still be those people who stand up and say, “Our President is a Muslim!” and, “Our President is a nigger!” That all of course has to do with the huge underlying racism that is still very mush alive and well in this country.

But my true feelings believe that if there was another leader representing everything Obama embodies, in another time or place that happened to be white, there would be people who would find every little flaw they could just to bring him down. He would have an old essay that upset too many people, or he would have connections to the wrong people, or he would have an old arrest for streaking, or if this man, this candidate who represented so much change had nothing that the establishment could dig up, they would shoot him dead.

This is what we must change. Not about our leaders, but about ourselves.

It is the fear of change that upsets so many. It is the powerful afraid of becoming powerless because the game in Washington will no longer be played the same way. The fear of change is terrifying because no one really knows what change means. What does a step away from “safe” actually look like? How will this affect me? How will this affect my children?

It seems cliché, but I have to insert a quote from my favorite leader that never was. Robert F. Kennedy was a leader who represented all that Obama is and probably more. He once wisely said:
“There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”
As I said before, Senator Obama will not be the change he wants because America is not ready, not yet. However, he will be a step in the right direction. That is if we are ready to put one foot in front of the other and take the plunge.

So I ask again:

Can we believe in change?

Can we believe in taking the right steps toward progress?

Can we change the game? Or is this game rigged from the start and can never truly be won?

Please America, you tell me…

Never afraid to ask questions, waiting for answers,

Not This Time...

Can we please talk about the dumbing down of the American people? Can we please talk about how pathetic it is that Sarah Palin’s expectations were so abysmally low in this debate that all she had to do was use full sentences to come out a winner? Can we please talk about how ridiculous it is that the post-debate spin is claiming that Palin accomplished her mission? What mission might that be mass media? The mission to complete a sentence? Give me a break!

If you watched the debate (or should I say non-debate) tonight you probably know by now that Palin did not answer any questions. She gave plenty of answers, but they were not answers to the questions that Gwen Ifill was asking. She bobbed and weaved better than any boxer I have ever seen. She tricked everyone into thinking she was intelligent by repeating rehearsed talking points. I have said before, McCain’s campaign is assaulting the intelligence of the American people, and tonight, they did it again. Tonight we saw someone who is completely unqualified to be a vice-president give her best performance. A performance meant to fool America into believing that she is actually intelligent, and actually has some working knowledge of the issues facing the US today. It was a performance meant to dumb us all down. It was an assault on our intelligence. Palin’s expectations were so incredibly low that she literally could do no wrong so long as she formed complete thoughts and stayed folksy. Sure she sounded intelligent. Unless you actually listened to the answers she was giving. The answers to questions that were not being asked. So I ask now…

Can we please talk about the dumbing down of America? Are we really supposed to believe that Palin knows what she is talking about? Are we really supposed to believe that the drivel pouring out of her mouth tonight was her own thoughts and ideas? I think not. I believe we should be holding our leaders up to a much higher standard. Our leaders need to…God Forbid…wait for it…LEAD! They need to lead by example. They need to lead by displaying their intelligence, their knowledge of the issues, and their knowledge of the struggles of the American people. Palin displayed her ability to cram for an exam like everyone who pulled an all-nighter to pass that final in college. She displayed her ability to recite from a script. And somehow the mass media is saying she has done a great job tonight?!

I am so blown away by this assertion. I am so completely baffled by the idea that Palin did well tonight. Tonight’s debate was not even a debate. It was disgusting. Biden was walking on glass all night. Unable to challenge Palin on anything because he might come off as intelligent…no wait…I meant condescending…yes…that is exactly what I meant. Not only were Palin’s expectations lower than low, but also, the mass media has created such a stigma of sexism around her that she can use it like an invisibility cloak to hide from real debate. The American people deserved a debate tonight where Biden and Palin could have actually confronted each other on the issues. Biden was not able to do this for fear of looking sexist or condescending. Palin was not able to do this because she does not have enough knowledge to debate Biden. So what we saw tonight was a political joke. We saw Biden answering exactly the questions he was asked, and we saw Palin answer the questions being asked by the fictitious moderator at a fairy tale debate in her head (most likely near a creek in Sedona, Arizona).

Tonight’s debate showed me one thing. It showed me that America has got to wake up. We have to take action. We have to pay attention. We have to start asking the tough questions. We have to prove that yes, the lights are on, and someone is home, and we are paying close attention. We have to prove that we are not going sit and allow our leaders to dumb us down. We have to prove that we are more intelligent than they think we are. We have to demand more of our leaders. If we do not do this, we get exactly what we all witnessed tonight: A highly qualified individual unable to challenge, and truly debate, his highly unqualified opponent. We get answers that sound perfectly intelligent and plausible, if only they corresponded to the questions. We get mass media force-feeding us the notion that someone who had no ideas or thoughts of their own was successful. We get mass media telling us that Palin connected with the average American. We get mass media feeding us the idea that because her expectations were so low, that she far exceeded them. We get mass media assuming that the average American is so unintelligent that we will not notice the difference between rehearsed, indoctrinated answers and actual ideas. We have to stand up and proclaim for all to hear, “No, you will not assault my intelligence. You will not get away with it. Not with so much on the line. Not this time.”

We can no longer sit complacent and expect more from our leaders, we have to demand more. If Palin wants to be my leader, she is going to have to start holding press conferences. She is going to have to start talking to the media. She is going to have to start actually answering the questions she is being asked. She is going to have to show us that she has her own ideas and thoughts. She has to show us that she can do more than simply recite the indoctrinated talking points of the conservative base. She is going to have to prove to me that she has some semblance of an idea of what the Bush Doctrine is.

I know, I know…I am just another nobody blogger in a vast sea of blogs. To some, I am just another liberal nut job. I am just a socialist that does not believe in freedom or democracy or whatever talking points you wish to insert on any given day. Tonight, I am not writing as a liberal, a democrat, a nut job, or whichever label you may wish to use. Tonight, I am writing as an American who believes that our leaders our assaulting our intelligence. Tonight, I was insulted, and if you were paying attention, you should be too. Tonight Mr. “Maverick”, Mr. “Straight Talk”, Mr. “Change”, Mr. McCain insulted us all by presenting us with a candidate so unqualified that all she had to do to appear successful was form complete sentences. Tonight the mass media insulted us all by declaring success for a candidate who’s “Straight Talk” answers were so crooked they resembled one of the numerous meandering rivers of Alaska. Tonight Palin insulted us all by attempting to pass off her answers as legitimate.

Everyone has something to say. Everyone has something to complain about. I am just one person writing down my thoughts and hoping that they will mean something to someone. I am just one person daring to write about how things could be, rather than how they are. Writing about how things could be, and asking: Why not?

So…why not? You tell me…

Stay folksy,

Failing Grades Are No Longer Acceptable

I recently saw a piece on CNN talking about our failing education systems. It got me thinking. Why are we so far behind the rest of the world, and what are we going to do about it?

In 2007 the USA failed to make the top ten in reading, mathematics, and science. That is shameful. The blame I feel lands with the public education system. Why are our students falling so far behind from the rest of the world?

Some may say it is the faults of the teachers, but with teachers unions being such a force to be reckoned with can we just fire all the “bad” teachers? And how do we define “bad” teachers?

Some would like to say that No Child Left Behind was a good thing. These people would argue that having standardized tests for children every year really allows us to raise the bar and to see which children are struggling, so we can make sure they catch up and therefore are not left behind.

However, the problem is that students are taught the tests. Period. Teachers are no longer allowed to create their own curriculums. They are not allowed to give much input to what they teach their students, and who knows these students (and more importantly the backgrounds and even neighborhoods) better than their teachers.

I feel it is important to challenge our teachers. We should give them more responsibility. Senator Obama said something around, “If we ask more from our teachers we can expect more.” We must challenge our teachers and reward our teachers.

There has to be a way to find out which teachers are getting the job done. There has to be a way to find out what their secrets are. Not all of our students are failing, but there is a problem somewhere and we have to fix it.

I believe we need more funding for education. We need more money for preschools. Studies have shown that children who know their alphabet before starting kindergarten do better later. Preschool is a great start, but without proper funding they will not work.

We need more teachers in the classrooms so that we can create smaller classrooms and focus more on students. The main problem here (and everyone knows it) is that teachers are not paid enough at all. There is something wrong in this country when CEOs and movie stars and athletes are paid millions upon millions of dollars every year, but our teachers struggle to survive with many moonlighting at night just to get by.

We need to strongly encourage every student to want to go to college, and help them achieve that goal by making it affordable. I feel Senator Obama’s plan to give each student a $4,000 credit per semester is a fantastic idea. Some may argue that this is government providing education, one step closer to Socialism. However, Senator Obama is not giving these students this money with no strings attached; they must earn this money by working in their community, etc.

We have to raise the educational bar in this country. I believe (and call me crazy) we can achieve higher standards by asking for higher standards. If we push for better teachers, and better schools we will get better students. We will get better futures.

This is a call to action. We can not fail. We must not fail.

We can’t expect the future to be great if we do not ask them to try,

Remember This Day

I am officially disgusted with Congressional Democrats.

Recently, in case you didn’t hear, congress passed legislation that allows offshore drilling. That’s right, the majority crumbled to the minority. To the crazy people who chant "DRILL BABY DRILL.” The party in power succumbed to the powerless. When they should have showed strength and stood for something they believe in, they buckled at the knees and showed how weak they are.

I'm mad because they tried to sugar coat this legislation with rules surrounding the drilling. One rule states that all drilling has to be beyond 50 miles of the shore. I suppose this won’t harm the ocean and sea life and everything else in the water because after 50 miles, there is nothing to harm…?

Another rule says the each state has to approve their want to drill. This sounds like a great idea. Suppose a drill project, let’s say done by Florida causes pollution and/or damage to the environment around Florida. What happens when that damage and or pollution moves towards Georgia, who doesn’t want offshore drilling? Who fixes that problem?

Congress also included in this bill the repealing of oil companies’ tax breaks, in order to use that money for renewable energy resources. That’s great, but couldn’t this have been the focus of the law without allowing off shore drilling?

I am angry because I truly believe that drilling is not the answer. It is the problem. For years now we (including President Bush) have talked about our addiction to oil. I know Bush doesn’t care about this (since he in fact wants more drilling) but I thought that the Democrats (including Obama, who is even for drilling now) were against drilling as a part of their platform. I thought they truly wanted to break our addiction and FOCUS on more important, renewable energies.

And are we supposed to just forget the fact that the oil companies already have acres and acres of land both offshore and on land that they are free to drill, but don’t. They want MORE because they truly believe they will be able to get enough out of our shores to make a difference.

They won’t.

Drilling will not lower the price of gas. Drilling will not lower the cost of a barrel of oil, and everyone knows that. Not using oil will lower the price of gas and the price of a barrel of oil. What drilling does do is affect the environment. Offshore drilling will also waste money that (if the oil companies are right in their commercials I see) should be spent on solar, wind, and other renewable energies.

If we want to build energy rigs in the ocean why not use the power of the waves. Where is that in this legislation? Where is the opposition against a party that is in the pocket of big oil? Where is the stand that opposes the raping of the earth, the stand that I thought my party stood for?

Remember this day as the day the crazies started winning.

Somehow the leaders I have rooted for have let me down.

Somehow I'm not surprised...

The Power of Talk

I don’t know when it happened exactly, but America has forgotten the importance of talk.

One would believe the explosion of the internet in the 90’s that in fact led to the flattening of the world and by cause and effect brought us closer together to exchange thoughts and ideas would have led to more and more conversation worldwide. One would hope that the rise of cell phones would make it easier to connect to everyone and anyone in an all digital age.

We can call, text, blog, vlog, e-mail, youtube, IM, skype, MySpace, and Google from the highest mountain tops to the lowest valleys and everywhere in between (including rocket ships in space and submarines underwater).

But somewhere in this world of constant information we forgot what it meant to simply talk to one another. We have gotten so used to short one word answers that conversation has become a thing of the past.

I recently read an article about the decline of talk therapy during visits between doctors and patients in psychiatry (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26011514/). This article goes on to speak about the rise of pills causing the decline, which is true without a doubt. However, it misses the big issue that people nowadays believe they simply do not have the time to sit down and discuss their problems anymore. In a time where we have more than enough gadgets to save time, we waste time. We waste time trying to be know-it- alls. In this world of instant information a patient can Google his symptoms and get instant gratification by telling his doctor what pill he needs to continue his day without missing a beat.

The big picture here I feel is dire. We as human beings have problems. We get stressed out. We get upset at little things e.g. Starbucks was out of whip cream today. We get upset about big things e.g. Oil is $120 a barrel (or for some the big problem may be Starbucks running out of whip cream). The point is talking to people is a way to help rid ourselves of these worries. Perhaps the person we share our feelings with has the same worries, and perhaps the two of you find a third, and a fourth, and heavens forbid you actually start a movement to get more whip cream at Starbucks—Err to lower the price of oil.

As I said before the world is flatter now than ever before, let’s take this opportunity to look out across the horizon and talk to each other. It’s more powerful than you think.

Got something on your chest? Feel free to comment…

Happy to listen,
LoOK

Inexcusable Part One

You probably know of the fabled Doron Braunshtein by now. He has been in the news in the recent past as a result of his edgy (see: ignorant) and overpriced (careful kiddies, spreading hate gets expensive) t-shirts equating Barack Obama with Hitler. Braunshtein, better known as Apollo Braun most recently received undeserved publicity for his “Obama is my Slave” shirt. I know I know…writing about this only creates more publicity for this walking contradiction, but the very fiber of my being would not allow me to say nothing (silence gives consent).

You see, one of his customers decided to wear this shirt in public, was confronted by four people who found said shirt inappropriate, and decided to sue the designer because it is apparently his fault that she decided to spread hate. Now I am not condoning violence or this designer (see: person who learned how to use iron on letters while simultaneously discovering plain cotton tees), but what happened to personal responsibility? Do we now live in an age when people do not have to accept responsibility for their actions? Their questionable choices? You say Freedom of Speech…Freedom of Opinion…Freedom of Expression…sure that is all well and fine and whatnot. You can have all your freedoms, but it sure as hell does not make them right. This customer decided to support a hate monger, and karma caught up (more on karma later). Besides…she was only shoved, cursed, spat at, and (heaven forbid!!) had her earphones pulled out of her ears. I am not certain, but I think things could have been a hell of a lot worse.

Personal. Responsibility. Please.

It is not Braunshtein’s fault that she wore this shirt.
It is, however, Braunshtein’s fault that he is a less than known designer looking to stir up attention by any means necessary. And I fully intend to speak on my disdain for this “designer” in my next post. Until then...

Questioning their choices,
